DESIGN PROCESS
Peak into the step-by-step process we take in designing your perfect space. Every beautiful design is the culmination of multiple steps, drawings and moving parts. While every client and job is unique, below are the general steps we go through in our design projects.
STEP ONE | Client Consultation
We want to get to know you—so be prepared for plenty of questions! What’s your lifestyle? Who will be using the space? What do you love? What do you absolutely want to avoid? What is your budget? This phase is all about understanding your needs, preferences, and vision. We take a deep dive into what’s most meaningful to you, ensuring the design is a true reflection of your style. During this stage, we often take measurements and photos to help inform the next steps.
STEP TWO | Schematic Design
To help you visualize the possibilities, we develop rough sketches, elevations, and preliminary furniture and finish concepts. These initial drawings serve as a starting point for discussion, ensuring we are aligned before moving forward. Think of this as the rough draft of your future space—giving you a glimpse of the overall direction while allowing for adjustments.
STEP THREE | Design Development
With the preliminary designs approved, we refine the details. This phase includes developing precise elevations, floor plans, and visual aids to help you fully envision the space. We carefully select colors, finishes, furniture, fabrics, and equipment while also considering custom millwork, cabinetry, and bespoke furniture pieces. Cost estimates are prepared, and the final design is presented for review and approval. We want you to see, feel, and experience what will soon come to life in your home or business.
STEP FOUR | Construction Documentation
We create any necessary construction documents. These are drawings that tell the fleet of contractors and craftspeople exactly how we want your space to be built and look. These details include millwork specification, finish selections such as flooring and paint, lighting plans and fixture selection, plumbing location and fixture selection, and electrical layouts in regard to the total scope of work to be completed.
**During this phase: bids are obtained and contractors are selected. While we are happy to recommend and source out multiple contractors - the client is responsible for making the final decision in regards to construction company.
STEP FIVE | Design Implementation
The details matter, and this phase ensures every element is finalized before execution. We refine drawings, confirm layouts, and make final adjustments to custom finishes. Expect ongoing collaboration with our design team to ensure everything is just right. Once approved, we move into purchasing, ordering, shipping, receiving—and of course, inspecting. Unexpected issues may arise (because, let’s face it, something always does), but rest assured, we are here to help with it all to make sure everything is perfect.
STEP SIX | Construction / Remodel
Throughout construction, we remain by your side, assisting with project coordination and ensuring everything stays on track. We check in regularly, manage the details, and problem-solve alongside your General Contractor. We also document the progress with videos and photos, keeping you involved and excited as your space transforms.
STEP SEVEN | Installation
The final stage is where everything comes together. Furniture, accessories, and finishing touches are delivered and placed according to the design plan. Our team oversees the installation process, ensuring that each element is thoughtfully arranged to bring your space to life. Our goal is to create a beautifully curated space that reflects your vision, and we can’t wait to share the final reveal with you!

Since design fees vary from firm to firm, we believe in full transparency when it comes to our pricing. Below, we outline our fee structure to give you a clear understanding of how we charge and what you can expect to be billed for.
Our Fee Structure
At Michael P. Design, our fees are based on an hourly rate. Because every project is unique—varying in scope and our level of involvement—we provide an initial estimate of design hours following the consultation. This estimate is calculated based on our experience with similar projects, factoring in the time required for each phase, including measuring, rendering, finish selection, meetings, site visits, and more.
